Threats to peaceful conduct of Saturday’s presidential election are mounting across the nation, with Anambra, Rivers leading in recent occurrences.
Hoodlums are reported to have Anambra police station in Ajali, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State on fire and setting free some prisoners after beating up some police officers. The police building was almost, totally burnt while at least two police patrol vans were equally burnt. However, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed said, “It’s a case of fire incident for now until the contrary is proved through discreet investigation.” He said “the Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Dandaura is presently at the scene for on the spot assessment.” “He ordered the DC Department of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department to conduct a thorough investigation in order to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident.
In Rivers states APC supporters have threatened that there would be no election as Police move to barricade INEC office The Police, this morning, barricaded the entrance to the Rivers State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Port Harcourt following a protest by some members of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the state who threatened that there would be no election unless INEC allows the party to field her candidates for the Saturday’s election.
The Nigeria Police NPS have also beef up security in Enugu prisons.
The Supreme Court had upheld the judgment as well as struck out an application by the APC seeking to compel INEC, to recognize all its candidates in the forthcoming elections in Rivers State. But the police, on sensing the protest, stormed the commission’s office on Aba road and cordoning off the office.
There have been similar reports in the week where INEC offices and materials in Abia, Plateau and Anambra were burnt.
