The Chief of Army Staff General Tukur Buratai said intelligence received by the military has shown plots by politicians to carry out bombings and other acts of violence in order to have their way during March 9 governorship elections.
“Recent security threat assessment and analysis of the coming elections showed that politicians have made plans to use all means available to truncate the peaceful conduct of the elections,” Buratai said Wednesday in a speech to operational commanders in the capital, Abuja.
Burutai said the military would take measures to contain the threats.
New state governors and legislatures will be elected in the March 9, 2019 polls that would take place across the country. The All Progressives Congress (APC), and the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the main contenders. President Muhammadu Buhari defeated opponents, including the PDP candidate, in Feb. 23 presidential elections to secure a second term in office. The PDP candidate, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku has however began a legal process challenging the results as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
