The over 13, 000 workers of defunct NITEL and Mtel, whose monthly pension payment was suspended, after the June schedule, would now heave a sigh of relief, following the resolution of the cause of the suspension, after several meetings were held between the workers representatives and ministry of finance officials.
The ministry and the pension administration department have agreed to continue the monthly payment, which was last made in June.
Competent sources told eWorldNews that the July payment would be effected this week and subsequent payments would be done at the end of every month.
To ensure that the incident of the payment suspension does not arise, the retirees have formed a Union under the chairmanship of former Minister of State for Communication and NITEL Lagos Island Territorial Manager, Mr Ibrahim Dasuki Nakande and Engineer Adu, also a former NITEL Territorial Manager.
They union officials are saddled with the responsibility of following up and monitoring the pension payment scheme and all other arrears that have accrued.
The over 13,000 retirees of the defunct NITEL and Mtel are worried and asking questions over the suspension of the payment of their pension.
eWorldnews had reported, last week, that the retirees, whose monthly pension payment began on October last year, was last paid in June, this year. The retirees who were expecting the payment, which normally comes before the end of the month did not receive the payment for July.
Investigation revealed that the suspension of the payment started when the President Muhammadu Burhari’s first term cabinet was dissolved and the former minister of finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, herself a former NITEL staff, vacated office.
Following the delay, former minister of finance, Mrs Ahmed, and other affected former staff of NITEL and Mtel waded into the matter, with attendant meetings aimed at resolving the reasons for the suspension.
