The United States Government today, announced new economic sanctions aimed at deterring Iran from carrying out its terrorist activities around the world and stopping it from achieving nuclear capability.
The new economic sanctions were announced by secretary of State, Mike Pompeo and treasury secretary Steven Mnuchi.
The announcement comes at a time of heightened tensions between Iran and the US. Earlier this week, Iran launched strikes on Iraqi bases housing US troops. Those strikes were retaliation after the US killed a top Iranian general last week.
“We will cut off billions of dollars of support to the Iranian regime and we will continue our enforcement of other entities,” Mnuchin said.
In an executive order authorising the sanctions, the “President of the United States of America, find that Iran continues to be the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism and that Iran has threatened United States military assets and civilians through the use of military force and support to Iranian-backed militia groups.”
He said it is the policy of the US to deny the Iranian government revenue, including revenues derived from the exports of products from key sectors of the Iranain economy.
