The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission ( NCC) Professor, Umar Danbatta has been reappointed to lead the telecom regulator for another five years.
He is the second EVC that would run the NCC for a two-term period of fives years each. The first EVC that had that privilege was Dr Ernest Ndukwe, who managed the Commission from 2000 to 2010.
Danbatta’s reappointment by president Muhammadu Buhari is to ensure the consolidation of the gains made in the telecommunications sector.
Mrs Uwa Suleiman, spokesperson of the ministry of communication and digital economy said in a statement that the appointment was based on the recommendation of the minister, Dr Isa Pantami to consolidate the gains made in the sector in “line with the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy of President Muhammadu Buhari”.
The Ministry statement says Pantami has directed Danbatta “to significantly improve on the overall performance of the Commission as well as ensure that adequate mechanisms are put in place to facilitate the implementation of all policies of Federal Government through the Ministry.”
Pantami also enjoined Danbatta to ensure that the interest of telecommunication consumers, Nigerians and investors are adequately protected.
Danbatta was first appointed in August 2015 for a period of five years. He replaced Dr Eugene Juwah.
Danbatta has a Ph.D in Electronics Engineering. Before his appointment in 2015 he was Acting Vice-Chancellor of Kano University of Science and Technology.
