Nigeria, through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has been honoured with the 2025 World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prize for its groundbreaking Digital Awareness Programme (DAP). The award, under Category C3: Access to Information and Knowledge, was announced at the WSIS Forum 2025 held in Geneva, Switzerland.
The DAP, an initiative by the NCC, stood out among hundreds of global entries for its innovative approach to bridging the digital divide in Nigeria. The programme is designed to equip secondary school students with essential ICT skills, promoting digital literacy and empowering young Nigerians to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.
Receiving the award on behalf of the country, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), Dr. Aminu Maida, expressed gratitude to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and WSIS stakeholders for the recognition. He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to driving inclusive digital transformation through sustainable and impactful programmes.
“This recognition is not just for the NCC,” Dr. Maida said, “but for the Nigerian people. It validates our vision of using ICT to foster education, inclusion, and innovation. We will continue to champion initiatives that empower our youth and expand access to critical digital resources.”
The WSIS Prize is a globally respected honour awarded to institutions whose ICT projects contribute significantly to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Nigeria’s win in Category C3 highlights the country’s growing leadership in digital inclusion across the African continent.
