In a powerful demonstration of compassion and commitment to inclusive education, New Horizons Nigeria, a leading ICT training and empowerment organization, has adopted the Federal Nigeria Society for the Blind (FNSB), Oshodi, Lagos. The initiative, spearheaded by the company’s Managing Director, Mr. Tim Akano, is transforming the digital learning experience for over 100 visually impaired students.
Under the adoption programme, New Horizons has donated high-performance computers, provided free internet access, and awarded 100% ICT scholarships to all students of the institution. The scholarships cover courses such as Microsoft Office, Data Science, Web Development, and Software Engineering, equipping the beneficiaries with practical digital skills for global competitiveness.
Going beyond institutional support, Mr. Akano personally adopted two individuals from the school — Mr. Olayinka, now a permanently employed ICT teacher at the school under New Horizons’ payroll, and Mr. Philips Oluwole Hassan, a vocational instructor. Mr. Hassan has also received a scholarship to study in Australia through the Tim Akano Foundation, a move aimed at deepening the school’s ICT capacity and sustainability.
Speaking during the presentation, Mr. Akano said the visually impaired deserve empowerment, not pity.
“We must move from sympathy to opportunity. These students are intelligent and capable — they only need access to the right tools. From now on, I am dedicating my birthdays to supporting the school and ensuring that no visually impaired student is left behind in the digital age,” he affirmed.
The Principal of the Federal Nigeria Society for the Blind, Mrs. Kayode Ajala, expressed profound appreciation to Mr. Akano and New Horizons Nigeria for what she described as “a life-changing intervention.”
“Mr. Akano’s generosity has restored hope and opened new frontiers for our students. He has shown that inclusion is possible when compassion meets vision,” she said.
With this initiative, New Horizons continues to reinforce its leadership in corporate social responsibility (CSR) and its mission to empower every Nigerian — regardless of physical limitation — with the digital skills to thrive in today’s knowledge-driven world.
