The Department of State Service (DSS) request to detain Omoyele Sowore, convener of RevolutionNow protest, for 90 days has been favourably considered by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
The court this morning granted the DSS request that Sowore be detained for 45 days pending the conclusion of investigations.
Granting an exparte order, Justice Taiwo Taiwo held that according to section 27 subsection 1 of the terrorism prevention Act , the word ”May” used in the section is directory and it’s not absolute, it affords the court the discretion to make a decision.
The court further held that after the expiration of the 45 days the applicants are at liberty to apply for an extension which is at the discretion of the court.
The DSS had approached the court asking for the detention of the former Presidential Candidate of the Action Alliance Congress, AAC, Omoyele Sowore, for 90 days in order to carry out a thorough investigation over alleged treasonable felony.
Sowore was arrested and detained by the DSS Operatives following his call for Revolution against the sitting democratically elected government.
He had in many interviews urged Nigerians to brace up for revolution that will put an end to many of the happenings in the country. This, the DSS interpreted as a treasonable offense and a violation of the Nigerian constitution.
Although the protest took place in some parts of the country, it was not successful as the Police and officers of the Nigerian Army stopped the protesters, leading to the arrest and trial of some of them.
