The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commissioned an eHealth facility at the State Specialist Hospital in Akure, Ondo State, as part of its efforts to revolutionize healthcare delivery through Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida, said the project is a demonstration of NCC’s commitment to leveraging ICT to improve the health sector and enhance citizens’ quality of life.
According to him, the completion of the eHealth project is a testament to the Commission’s dedication to driving innovation, research, and growth in Nigeria’s digital economy.
“This initiative is two-pronged,” Maida said. “First, ICT can better integrate the health sector into the digital economy, allowing it to enjoy the ubiquity and benefits that other sectors already experience. Secondly, healthy citizens are better contributors to the digital economy, especially when they can access care via eHealth platforms.”
He added that integrating advanced ICT solutions into healthcare will improve the quality of medical services and ensure access to care regardless of geographical location.
Dr. Maida expressed optimism that the successful deployment of the project would further promote the adoption of ICT in Nigeria’s healthcare system. He noted that the implementation of eHealth solutions would streamline medical processes, enhance patient care, and enable efficient management of health records.
“With the State Specialist Hospital in Akure now equipped with innovative technologies, healthcare professionals can deliver more timely and accurate diagnoses, treatment plans, and follow-up care,” he said. “This is expected to boost patient satisfaction and lead to better health outcomes.”
He emphasized that the impact of the project extends beyond the hospital itself to the larger community, setting a precedent for other healthcare institutions across the country.
Dr. Maida attributed the success of the project to collaboration among key stakeholders, including technology experts and government partners.
He described the initiative as a model that can be replicated and scaled in other regions to ensure the benefits of ICT in healthcare are realized nationwide.
